What Makes the 5th Gen 4Runner Blitz EVO Front Bumper Different?

If you're looking at our Blitz EVO Front Bumper for the 5th Gen Toyota 4Runner, you may be wondering what makes it different from our previous Blitz bumper or a traditional steel aftermarket bumper.

For the new Evolution Series, we completely redesigned the Blitz around a hybrid construction. Instead of building the entire bumper from one material, we use a 1/4-inch steel substructure with a lightweight aluminum outer shell.

The idea is pretty simple. We wanted steel strength where it matters, without carrying the weight of a complete steel bumper everywhere it doesn't.

Steel Strength Where You Need It

The internal steel structure is the backbone of the Blitz EVO. This is where your winch mounts, and it's also where we've integrated the recovery points.

The D-ring tabs are now soft-shackle ready, so you can connect a soft shackle directly to the recovery point without needing an additional accessory.

By keeping these high-load areas tied into the 1/4-inch steel structure, we're able to maintain strength where it's important while using aluminum for the bumper's outer shell.

Why Use an Aluminum Outer Shell?

Weight isn't the only advantage to using aluminum.

The lightweight outer shell makes the bumper much easier to handle during installation, especially compared to wrestling a complete steel bumper into position. Aluminum is also naturally corrosion resistant, which is a nice advantage for something that's going to spend its life exposed to rain, snow, road salt, mud, and whatever else your 4Runner sees.

Instead of choosing between a steel bumper and an aluminum bumper, the EVO design lets us take advantage of both materials.

    An Updated OEM+ Look

We also wanted the Blitz EVO to look different.

The exterior uses our black sand texture powder coat, while the recessed center section is finished in a contrasting gray sand texture. We finished the recovery points in red to add another small detail to the front of the bumper.

Our goal was to give the bumper more of an OEM+ appearance. It still clearly looks like an aftermarket bumper, but it feels integrated into the front of the 4Runner rather than simply hanging off of it.

A Bull Bar You Can Remove

We know not everyone wants the same look on their 4Runner, so the bull bar is bolted directly to the bumper rather than permanently welded in place.

If you like the additional protection and appearance of the bull bar, leave it installed. If your build changes later and you'd rather have a cleaner, lower-profile look, you can remove it without replacing the bumper.

Just as importantly, the bull bar is positioned so it does not interfere with the 4Runner's adaptive cruise control sensors. We wanted to give you the option of running the bull bar without sacrificing a factory feature you may use every day.

    Adding Viper Wings

If you want to change the look and clearance of the Blitz EVO even further, you can add our optional Viper Wings.

The Viper Wings give the front of the 4Runner a more aggressive appearance while also providing additional clearance. They're an option rather than something built permanently into the bumper, so you can decide how far you want to take the build.

Is the Blitz EVO Right for Your 4Runner?

The Blitz EVO was designed for someone who wants the protection, recovery capability, and winch mounting of an aftermarket bumper without automatically accepting the weight of a traditional all-steel design.

By combining a 1/4-inch steel substructure with an aluminum outer shell, we're able to put each material where it makes the most sense. Add in the soft-shackle-ready recovery points, removable bull bar, adaptive cruise compatibility, and optional Viper Wings, and you have quite a bit of flexibility in how you set up the front of your 5th Gen 4Runner.

If you're considering the Blitz EVO and have questions about winch fitment, Viper Wings, installation, or whether it's the right bumper for your build, reach out to our Customer Experience team. We'd be happy to help.
