Platform Rack vs. Evolution Series Roof Rack: Which One Should You Choose?

If you're trying to decide between our Platform Rack and Evolution Series Roof Rack, the good news is there really isn't a wrong choice. The better question is what you plan to carry, how much capacity you need, and how much you want to change your vehicle.

The biggest difference between the two is pretty simple. Our Platform Rack works with your factory roof rails, while the Evolution Series is a complete roof rack that replaces the factory rails.

Here's how I would decide between them.

When I'd Choose the Platform Rack

If you like the factory look of your vehicle and just want more usable space on the roof, I'd lean toward the Platform Rack.

It works in tandem with your existing factory rails and has a slimmer, more OEM appearance than the Evolution Series. It's also completely bolt-on, with zero permanent modifications to your vehicle.

That's a big advantage if you're leasing, think you may sell the vehicle later, or simply want the ability to return everything back to stock. Remove the rack, and you're basically back where you started.

For carrying the normal stuff we throw on the roof, like extra fuel, water, storage boxes, traction boards, kayaks, or camping gear, the Platform Rack works great.

You can even carry a smaller rooftop tent on it. Once rooftop tents start getting larger and heavier, though, I'd start looking at the Evolution Series.

When I'd Choose the Evolution Series

The Evolution Series is what I'd choose if you're looking for a full replacement roof rack, need more carrying capacity, or simply want more of that traditional aftermarket roof rack look.

Instead of mounting to your factory rails, the Evolution Series replaces them and gives you a full aluminum rack designed specifically for the vehicle. That opens up more possibilities for heavier loads and gives you more flexibility when you're figuring out how to mount everything.

If a rooftop tent is a big part of your plans, this is the direction I'd push you.

A smaller tent can work with the Platform Rack, but the Evolution Series gives you more options as tents get larger and heavier. If you're spending that kind of money on a tent and planning to sleep up there, I'd rather start with the rack designed for the additional capacity.

So Which One Would I Buy?

For a daily driver where I wanted to keep the factory rails and retain a clean, OEM-style appearance, I'd buy the Platform Rack. It's simple, completely bolt-on, and still gives you a ton of usable storage space.

If I were building the vehicle for heavier use, carrying a larger rooftop tent, or knew I wanted more capacity as the build grew, I'd spend the extra money and go with the Evolution Series.

Either one will handle the kind of gear most of us want to get out of the vehicle and onto the roof. Fuel, water, storage boxes, traction boards, kayaks, and camping gear are all right at home on either rack.

It really comes down to how you're going to use it.

If you're still not sure which one makes sense for your particular build, give us a call or send us a message. Tell us what vehicle you have and what you're planning to carry, and we'll help you figure out which rack makes the most sense.
