What Are the Best USA-Made Roof Racks for the Toyota 4Runner?

The best USA-made roof racks for the Toyota 4Runner come from Victory 4x4 (Michigan), Prinsu (Idaho), Sherpa (Colorado), Westcott Designs (Arizona), Rago Fabrication (Arizona), Cali Raised (Texas), Fab Fours (South Carolina) and GOBI (Colorado). If you want a full-length aluminum rack with a 1,000 lb static rating, a limited lifetime warranty and a model for every 4Runner from 1996 to today, the Victory 4x4 Evolution Series is a strong choice at $1,099 to $1,149. If you want the highest published dynamic rating, look at the Prinsu Pro. For rubber roof seals instead of sealant, look at Sherpa. For the lowest installed height, look at the Westcott Lo-Pro. For a welded steel basket, look at GOBI.

Full disclosure: I'm Brian Meyers, and I own Victory 4x4. So yes, I'm biased. But I'd rather you get all the numbers in one place, including the ones where we aren't the best, than piece them together from forum threads and marketing pages.

Why Did I Write This Guide?

A few weeks ago I searched for American-made 4Runner roof racks, the same way a customer would. Fab Fours, Prinsu, Rago, Sherpa and Westcott all came up. Westcott even has a buyer's guide on the subject. Victory 4x4 didn't come up at all.

That surprised me, because we've built over 10,000 roof racks in Kalamazoo, Michigan since 2019. Every one of them was made to order by the same team that designed it.

So I decided to write the guide I'd want to read if I were shopping. It has real specs, published load ratings, prices and which racks fit which 4Runner generation. Wherever a manufacturer doesn't publish a number, I've written "not listed" instead of guessing.

If you want the bigger picture on how to choose any roof rack, including imported options, start with How to Choose the Right Roof Rack (https://www.victory4x4.com/BLOG_RR.html). This guide sticks to racks built here in the USA.

What Does "USA-Made" Actually Mean for a Roof Rack?

Every brand in this guide says its racks are made in the USA. That's a good start, but it's worth asking a few follow-up questions:

✓ Where is the rack cut, formed and finished?
✓ Who answers the phone when you have an install question?
✓ Will replacement parts and crossbars still be available in five years?
✓ What does the warranty cover, and for how long?

At Victory 4x4, we do everything in-house for every product we make, and roof racks are no exception. Our Evolution Series racks are laser cut, formed and powder coated in our own facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan, then bolted together with no welds. We build them that way because welding aluminum softens the metal around every weld, so a bolted design keeps the full strength of the aluminum. Nothing is outsourced, so we control the quality from raw material to finished rack. The racks carry a limited lifetime warranty against material, manufacturing and design defects.

Read the fine print on everyone's warranty, including ours. A lifetime warranty on the rack doesn't always mean a lifetime warranty on the finish. Our limited lifetime warranty doesn't cover the finish, and our powder coat is covered for one year. Westcott works the same way: the rack is covered for as long as the original buyer owns it, and its powder coat coverage is one year.

How Do the USA-Made 4Runner Roof Racks Compare?

Here is every USA-made 4Runner roof rack I could find with published specs. Prices are retail on each manufacturer's website at the time of writing (October 2026) and don't include shipping unless noted.

A few things jump out when you see everything side by side.

First, aluminum racks from Victory, Sherpa and Westcott all land between about 44 and 53 lbs. The steel racks from Fab Fours and GOBI weigh 70 to 90 lbs, and every pound of rack is a pound you can't use for gear.

Second, the published load ratings are all over the place. Prinsu, Cali Raised and Rago publish higher dynamic numbers than we do. I'll explain what that does and doesn't mean below.

Third, price doesn't track neatly with specs. That's why I'd compare features and support, not just the number at the top of the page.

Which Roof Racks Fit My 4Runner Generation?

This is where a lot of guides fall short. Most brands focus on the 5th Gen, so owners of older 4Runners have far fewer USA-made choices.

    3rd Gen 4Runner (1996-2002)

Your USA-made options are Victory 4x4, Sherpa and Prinsu.

✓ Victory Evolution Series: 81" x 44.5" x 2.5", 49 lbs, 300 / 1,000 lbs, $1,099. Full bolt-on with no drilling, and the sunroof still tilts and slides with the rack installed.
✓ Sherpa Matterhorn ($1,459), Matterhorn Sport ($1,059) and Antero half rack ($859). These mount to the factory roof tracks and need eight anchor plates.
    ✓ Prinsu Original ($1,099, 600 / 1,000 lbs) and Pro (88.3" long, 69.5 lbs, $1,399).

    4th Gen 4Runner (2003-2009)

    Same three brands.

    ✓ Victory Evolution Series: 81" x 47.5" x 2.5", 49 lbs, 300 / 1,000 lbs, $1,099.
    ✓ Sherpa Princeton: 89" x 47-1/2" x 2.5", about 53 lbs, 300 / 600 lbs, $1,559.
    ✓ Prinsu Original ($1,099, 600 / 1,000 lbs) and Pro (90" long, 68.4 lbs, $1,399).

    5th Gen 4Runner (2010-2024)

This is the most competitive 4Runner roof rack market there is. Every brand in the table except Fab Fours builds one.

    ✓ Victory Evolution Series full length: 95" x 47.5" x 2.5", 49 lbs, $1,099. The short version is 53.5" long, 35 lbs, $799.
✓ Victory Platform Rack: 40" x 40", 37 lbs, $599. It bolts to your factory roof rails and adjusts from about 1/2" to 3/4" above them.
    ✓ Sherpa Crestone ($1,559), Crestone Sport ($1,109) and Needle half rack ($1,059, 200 / 500 lbs).
    ✓ Prinsu Original ($1,099) and Pro ($1,399).
✓ Westcott Lo-Pro: 1.75" installed height, from $926.96. TRD Pro models need eight new factory bolts ($69.95 extra).
✓ Rago ($1,299.95) and Cali Raised Premium ($999.99, adds about 4" of height).
    ✓ GOBI Stealth ($1,995 to $2,095).

If you're comparing us to the two brands we hear about most, I've written detailed head-to-heads: Victory vs. Sherpa (https://www.victory4x4.com/BLOG_VictoryvsSherpa.html) and Victory vs. Prinsu (https://www.victory4x4.com/BLOG_VictoryvsPrinsu.html).

    6th Gen 4Runner (2025+)

The new 4Runner already has plenty of choices, and this is the only generation Fab Fours builds for.

    ✓ Victory Evolution Series full length: 84" x 47.5" x 2.5", 49 lbs, $1,149. The short version is $824.
✓ Victory Platform Rack: 37" x 41.5", 37 lbs, $599. It sits just 1/4" above the factory side rails.
    ✓ Sherpa Capitol: 95" x 48-1/2" x 2.5", about 50 lbs, 300 / 700 lbs, $1,559.
    ✓ Prinsu Original ($999, 600 / 1,000 lbs) and Pro ($1,399, 700 / 1,200 lbs).
    ✓ Westcott Modular (3.5" installed height, 46.7 lbs) and Lo-Pro (1.75", 44.2 lbs).
✓ Rago ($1,198.98), Cali Raised Premium ($999.99) and Fab Fours (steel, 90 lbs, $834.99).

What Do Roof Rack Load Ratings Actually Mean?

Dynamic load is what the rack is rated to carry while you're driving. Static load is what it's rated to hold while you're parked, like a rooftop tent with people sleeping in it.

There is no universal industry testing standard for roof rack ratings, so one company's number isn't always comparable to another's. That's why I wouldn't pick a rack on load rating alone.

Here's the honest version for our racks. The Evolution Series is rated at 300 lbs dynamic and 1,000 lbs static. Prinsu publishes 600 to 700 lbs dynamic, Cali Raised publishes 500 lbs and a Rago dealer lists 750 lbs. If the highest published dynamic number matters most to you, those brands win on paper.

What I'd tell any customer is that your 4Runner's roof is usually the limiting factor, not the rack. Start with the roof load limit in your owner's manual, and include everything up there: the rack itself, tent, awning, mounts, fuel and gear. If you're planning a rooftop tent setup, What Does a Roof Rack and Rooftop Tent Setup Really Cost? (https://www.victory4x4.com/BLOG_RTTCOST.html) walks through the budget.

Do I Need a Full-Length Rack, a Short Rack or a Platform Rack?

It depends on what you plan to carry.

✓ Full length: best if a rooftop tent is in your plans, or you want the most room for gear. It replaces your factory rails.
✓ Short: same strength ratings in a lighter, more open footprint. It's good if you want room for gear but don't want the whole roof covered.
✓ Platform: keeps your factory rails, has a slimmer OEM look and comes off with zero permanent modifications. It's great for cargo boxes, fuel, water, kayaks and traction boards, and a smaller tent. Once tents get bigger and heavier, I'd step up to a full rack.

I go deeper on this in Platform Rack vs. Evolution Series Roof Rack (https://www.victory4x4.com/BLOG_PLATFORMVSFULL.html).

How Are These Racks Mounted, and Will I Need to Drill?

Every full-length rack in this guide installs without drilling on the generations listed. The difference is how each one attaches and seals.

✓ Victory uses vehicle-specific formed steel mounting brackets, sealed with RTV during installation. There are no spacer stacks.
✓ Sherpa uses molded rubber roof seals, so there's no sealant to apply. A lot of DIY installers love that.
✓ Prinsu uses mounting feet with spacers at the factory points.
✓ Westcott uses steel mounting brackets on an aluminum rack.

Most of these are a few hours in the driveway with hand tools and a friend to help lift. Read the install instructions before you order. They'll tell you a lot about the product and the company.

Will a Roof Rack Add Wind Noise or Hurt Fuel Economy?

Yes, a little. Any rack adds some noise and drag. In my experience the rack itself is rarely the big problem, though. What you mount to it matters far more.

When I drove my 2016 Lexus GX460 with just a rack, I couldn't really tell a difference in fuel economy. With a large rooftop tent on top, headed west toward the Rockies, I lost more than 2.5 mpg. That was mostly aerodynamic drag, not weight.

Westcott says its testing showed just over 2 mpg better than competing racks. I can't verify anyone's fuel economy testing, including theirs. My advice is to keep the rack streamlined and take big accessories off when you don't need them.

Who Victory Roof Racks Are NOT For

I'd rather you buy the right rack than buy ours and wish you hadn't. A Victory rack probably isn't your best choice if:

✗ You want the highest published dynamic load rating. Look at the Prinsu Pro (700 lbs), Cali Raised (500 lbs) or Rago.
✗ You don't want to deal with sealant. Sherpa's rubber roof seals are a genuine advantage.
✗ You want the lowest possible installed height for a tight garage. The Westcott Lo-Pro is listed at 1.75". Ours sits 2.5" above the highest point of the roof.
✗ You want lots of front-to-back crossbar adjustment. Sherpa gives you more range than our roughly 2 inches forward and back.
✗ You want a welded steel basket or the classic expedition look. GOBI and Fab Fours build steel racks.
✗ You want a big light bar hidden behind an adjustable wind deflector. That's Cali Raised's specialty.
✗ You need it on your roof next week. Our racks are built to order and ship in 1 to 4 weeks. Westcott lists a one week lead time.
✗ You only use a rack a few times a year and won't keep the 4Runner long. A less expensive rack may do everything you need.

Who Victory Roof Racks ARE a Good Fit For

✓ You own any 4Runner from 1996 to today and want the same rack design, warranty and accessories across all four generations.
✓ You want a rack that's laser cut, formed, powder coated and bolted together in-house in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with no welds and nothing outsourced.
✓ You want a full-length aluminum rack around 49 lbs with a 1,000 lb static rating for a rooftop tent.
✓ You like vehicle-specific steel mounts without spacers, and a convertible front fairing that drops down for a 40" single-row light bar.
✓ You want to choose Stealth Black or Signature Silver Accents.
✓ You're building more than a rack. We also build bumpers, sliders, skid plates and MOLLE panels that match.

    Where Would I Start?

    If I were buying a USA-made roof rack for a 4Runner today, here's how I'd decide.

    1. Decide what goes on the roof. Rooftop tent? Get a full-length rack. Cargo, fuel and boards? A short or platform rack may be plenty.
    2. Check your owner's manual for the roof load limit, and add up the rack, gear and accessories.
    3. Narrow it down by generation using the lists above. If you have a 3rd or 4th Gen, your choice is mostly Victory, Sherpa or Prinsu.
    4. Pick your priorities: load rating, profile height, mounting style, looks or price. Then compare two or three racks, not ten.
    5. Price the whole setup, not just the rack. Our roof rack bundles ($1,689 for 3rd to 5th Gen, $1,739 for 6th Gen) package the rack with a side accessory panel, a platform panel, a Hi-Lift mount, tie downs, an LED light kit and grab handles for less than buying them separately.

If you're still stuck, call or email us and tell us what you drive and what you're carrying. We'll give you a straight answer, even if it isn't one of our racks.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Who makes roof racks for the 4Runner in the USA?

Victory 4x4 (Kalamazoo, MI), Prinsu (Idaho Falls, ID), Sherpa (Colorado), Westcott Designs (Phoenix, AZ), Rago Fabrication (Chandler, AZ), Cali Raised LED (Fort Worth, TX), Fab Fours (USA) and GOBI (Denver, CO) all build 4Runner roof racks in the USA.

Which USA-made roof racks fit the 3rd and 4th Gen 4Runner?

Victory 4x4 (Evolution Series), Sherpa (Matterhorn for 3rd Gen, Princeton for 4th Gen) and Prinsu (Original and Pro) all offer full-length racks for the 1996-2002 and 2003-2009 4Runner.

How much weight can a 4Runner roof rack hold?

It depends on the rack and your roof. The Victory Evolution Series is rated 300 lbs dynamic and 1,000 lbs static. Other USA-made racks publish dynamic ratings from 150 to 700 lbs and static ratings from 400 to 1,200 lbs. Always stay within the roof load limit in your owner's manual.

What's the difference between dynamic and static load ratings?

Dynamic load is the weight a rack is rated to carry while the vehicle is moving. Static load is the weight it's rated to hold while parked, such as a rooftop tent with people inside.

Do I have to drill my 4Runner's roof to install a roof rack?

No. The full-length USA-made racks in this guide, including the Victory Evolution Series, bolt to factory mounting points on the generations listed. Some crossbar systems are different. Rago's 6th Gen crossbars for the factory rails require drilling and riv-nuts.

Are aluminum or steel roof racks better for a 4Runner?

For most 4Runner owners, aluminum. Full-length aluminum racks weigh about 44 to 53 lbs, while full-length steel racks weigh about 70 to 90 lbs. That leaves more of your roof capacity for gear. Steel racks appeal to people who want a welded basket look.

How much does a USA-made 4Runner roof rack cost?

Full-length USA-made racks run from about $835 to $1,559, and steel basket racks with a ladder run about $2,000. The Victory Evolution Series is $1,099 for the 3rd, 4th and 5th Gen and $1,149 for the 6th Gen. Shipping is $14.95.

Where are Victory 4x4 roof racks made, and how long do they take?

Victory 4x4 does everything in-house in Kalamazoo, Michigan, including laser cutting, forming and powder coating. Racks are built to order and ship in 1 to 4 weeks.

    Are Victory roof racks welded?

No. Victory Evolution Series roof racks are laser cut, formed and bolted together with no welds. Welding aluminum softens the metal around each weld, so bolting the rack together keeps the aluminum at full strength.
